Workshop at the Ranch
These images are part of a series of long-range projects at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. These projects center around photographing the USOTC’s facilities and athletes in both training and in competitions at the complex in a dramatically style. For me, that dramatic style involves off camera lighting. This leads me to using the Nikon SB-900 Speedlights with Auto FP High Speed Sync mode, which allows me to use fast shutter speeds as my sync speed. As explained in my Workshop at the Ranch articles over the past several months I have been using some specific pieces of equipment for all the sports action with Speedlight projects. The Nikon D3s with its clean High ISO and set to Auto FP High Speed Sync, Nikon SB-900 Speedlights are in Remote and are set to the Manual mode. The SANYO Eneloope rechargeable AA batteries give me 275 plus images with a 2.3 seconds recycle time at Full Power. The Nikon SU-800 Commander controls all Speedlight power output. The FourSquare by Lightware Direct that holds up to 4 Speedlights, the Radio Popper PX system is used to fire my Speedlights over great distances, and the Michael Bass Design Fiber Optic Bundles improve the transmission signal to my Speedlights in bright sunshine. This “off camera lighting” works in combination with the available ambient light of an indoor arena or the outdoor venue, as is the case with the Velodrome in Colorado Springs near the USOTC complex. With lighting sports action using Speedlights as our continuing topic of learning, let’s see how the summer season of Velodrome cycling looks when lit with Speedlights. Here is Velo Nights.
It is my hope that this series of sports action with Speedlight articles over the past several months has helped many of you who shoot sports to leave your comfort zone and take on the exciting challenge of lighting. I suggest reading and rereading the past Workshop at the Ranch articles to fully gain some insights about this fantastic new technology and equipment. Please join me again next month, as Workshop at the Ranch will continue with sports action with Speedlights. See you next time here on Workshop at the Ranch. Adios, Dave EQUIPMENT contact information
