On The Road
May, 2005

Hi and welcome to this edition of
On The Road. I was invited to speak at the Nevada Photojournalism
Day by a good friend of mine, Ira Gostin. This seminar was hosted
by the University of Nevada, Reno and the Reynolds School of Journalism
and featured a variety of speakers besides myself who would address
the 75 participants ranging from students to avid amateurs to
professionals. This program was the first of its kind at the University
where Ira and the school are moving forward with their newly forming
photojournalism program. I had a wonderful time, enjoyed meeting
the students and learned a lot................yes, I learned a
lot!

Speaker#1 Ron Taniwaki.....Ron is one of my
closest friends and was the "lead off" speaker of
the seminar. Ron works for Nikon and has more information
than a person should be allowed to have. Any subject,
any topic, you ask Ron and he has the answer. Ron's presentation
of digital technology and workflow reminded me of how digital
cameras work to our advantage and how our lives as photographers
have changed over the past few years. He was correct (as usual)...
MY LIFE has changed since the digital revolution. Why it seemed
like only yesterday that I would spend many HOURS driving
back and forth to the lab, looking at snip tests, wondering
how 50 rolls got scratched...........those were the good old
days...NOT. I thought how much I enjoyed trying to convince
airport officials in Frankfurt, Germany that they could not
X-RAY my film........and that little trip to the special examination
room..............those were the good old days...NOT. I looked
back with great fondness to all the venues I would encounter
that had a wonderful mix of light...and how I longed for the
challenge of correcting that mix with gels and filters that
cut down my exposure to were I would need to PUSH my 800 speed
film 2 stops just to achieve a 1/250 shutter speed at f2............those
were the good old days...NOT. And the grain...it was to die
for!...BIG as BOULDERS...and when someone would use it as
a 2 page spread I could play connect the dots.....................those
were the good old days...NOT. Digital..........this is a good
"new" day! |
|
Speaker#2 Me...Whenever I
have the opportunity to speak in person to photojournalism
students and people who want to learn more about photography
I get very passionate about the topics I bring to the class.
My presentation was a kind of anthology of my 25 years as
a photographer that emphasized some aspects that I felt
would help other photographers grow in their quest for a
career in the industry. I emphasized that "becoming
a student of your subject" would greatly increase your
ability to capture the moment and provide the best images
for your client. I explained that all of us should find
a way to "raise the industry standard" in order
to capture images that other photographers do not. I encouraged
the class to "leave the pack behind" and to use
technology to give themselves an edge over the rest of the
photographers at the game. That you need to "bring
passion to your profession" in order to capture images
that draw the viewer in. And to "dream".......sit
down and spend some time thinking about the kinds of pictures
you want to make and the stories you want to tell with your
images. These aspects are the core of my photography.

Speaker#3 Ken Kobre...is a professor
of Photojournalism at San Francisco State University. His
topic was ethics and his subject was a freshman student in
his school.......Omar Vega. The saga revolves around Omar
approaching his love of photojournalism with such involvement
and passion that he is now a subject of ethical standards
and first amendment rights issues. His tale is a long and
involved series of events beginning with documentary images
of his university dorm.....to images of a crime in progress...to
censorship. A fascinating story that was presented in a courtroom
style of questions and examination of facts, images and opinion,
this was a presentation like no other I have ever heard. It
ended with no clear cut answers as Omar's case is still pending,
but it raised many thoughts in my mind regarding the complex
issues and situations that today's photographers find themselves
in. Ken did a marvelous job leading us through this mystery
of ins and outs...ups and downs. If Omar's story ever comes
out on the silver screen, I will be first in line to buy a
ticket. |
|
Speaker#4 Peter DaSilva...a freelance
stringer for the New York Times living in the Bay Area.
He illustrated his hectic schedule and "out of trunk"
life style with brilliant images and commentary. If I could
some up his presentation with one word it would be "TRUST"
Peter has accomplished what all of us must strive to do
each day........gain the trust of those individuals we come
in contact with. From the guy on the street...to his subject...to
his editor...to the people who read the NY Times, Peter
first and foremost has their trust. Anyone who can accomplish
this will get great images. Yes, he is a master of his equipment
and a brilliant mind when it comes to today's photographic
technology, but his greatest asset is his willingness to
commit 100% to the people he works with, photographs, and
the readership that loves the images he makes. I wrote down
5 pages of quotes during his 90 minute presentation but
feel this one reveals his secret for gaining the trust of
all those he comes in contact with..."respect given
results in respect received." Thank you Peter.

Speaker#5 Kim Komanich...a long time
photojournalist and a Pulitzer Prize winner offered us a glimpse
into the future of photojournalism. Kim pointed out to the
class that "Technology is now advanced enough that we
can get back to making great pictures" Amen to
that. For the past 7 years I, like most of you, have been
going to "NIGHT SCHOOL." We have been living on
a high speed learning curve that we both love and hate. I
love all the innovations and breakthroughs with digital cameras,
computers and all the technology that is available to me,
but I hate the constant learn, learn, learn......more, more,
more daily diet of change. I believe Kim is correct in his
opening remark. It would seem that with the arrival of the
Nikon's D2X and Canon's MarkII series that we have reached
a point of photographic satisfaction. I am not suggesting
that these cameras are the end of the line...FAR FROM IT!
But, I am suggesting, as did Kim, that we, the photographers
have risen to the level of understanding and familiarity with
cameras, computers and technology to where digital is now
becoming second nature to us...after a 7 year itch. We can
now return to the task of making great pictures rather than
thumbing through White Balance, Noise NINJA, Third Party Plug
and Play, CCD, CMOS, LBCAST, Lens Ratio Conversion, Image
Resolution, and a touch of CONVULSIONS. Kim also spoke of
our next class in night school being the inclusion of AUDIO
and VIDEO used in harmony with still images. He showed several
examples where photojournalists have combined their still
images with audio and sometimes video to better communicate
the story to the viewer. My first thought regarding audio/video
along with my still images was "I want retirement to
come sooner"...but then I thought about the possibilities...
and as usual for me I began to "dream" of what I
might do................ |
I hope you enjoyed this....well.....different
On The Road. The learning never stops for any of us. My hat is
off to Ira Gostin and the University of Nevada, Reno for putting
together a great seminar. Remember that all the On The Road and
Workshop at the Ranch series, starting with January 2003 are archived
on my website for you to read and enjoy at any time. Until we
meet again On The Road......................Adios,
