On The Road

March, 2005

Hi and welcome to this issue of On The Road. A real mix this month ranging from assignments shot with the NEW NIKON D2X to the Sports Shooter Academy. Let's dig in...........................

Image #1 A tree. "Big deal" you say.......but it is one of the first images I captured with the Nikon D2X. I am sure all of us do the same thing.....we get a new camera and run outside and take some pictures. A beautiful ice storm the night before frosted everything on the ranch. What better way to begin examining of the D2X file quality than with an ultra detailed scene. Every twig is visible with detail. I printed a 24 X 36 and was amazed at the texture in the tree bark that was captured. Nikon D2X, ISO100, Nikon 17mm-55mm G Lens, 1/125, f5.6, WB Auto, Bogen Tripod with Slik Ball Head, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #2 Lightpainting. This is a JPG. A 2 minute exposure put the D2X to the long exposure noise test. Perfect! Not a spec of noise thanks to the Long Exposure Noise Reduction mode. The color and depth of the image is terrific. There is detail everywhere.......from the texture of the fishing net to the inscription on the brass reel. Another 24 X 36 was printed. I was so excited with the results. My lightpaintings will now have the excellence in quality to see the finer aspects of the scene I lightpaint and great shadow detail. Nikon D2X, ISO100, Nikon 17mm-55mm G Lens, 2 Minute exposure at f8, WB 8000K, Nikon Electronic Cable Release, Bogen Tripod, Slik Ball Head, Sharper Image 5 LED Flashlight, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #3 Ripped........A diving competition provided a good venue to further put the Nikon D2X through the paces. This months Workshop at the Ranch features an ISO 1600 image, but this image was ISO 100. I used a slow shutter speed of 1/13 of a second and a Nikon 200mm-400mm G VR lens for this divers " RIPPED " entry. This is captured with the High Speed Crop mode that enables me to shoot at 8 frames/sec. I tilted the camera slightly to have the athlete diving on a diagonal line through the frame. The VR worked great and held the divers face and body lines sharp as well as the splash as she broke the surface of the water. Nikon D2X, ISO 100, 1/13 sec at f6.3, WB Auto ( worked great! ), Nikon 200mm-400mm G VR Lens, Nikon Pistol Grip, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #4 Relay Runner.....Indoor Track and Field with sport strobes is so much fun. I used one Elinchrom 600RX with a polished long throw reflector. The lane lines and shadow make a beautiful graphic look. Nikon D2X, ISO320 ( there is no noise .....so I used ISO320 ), 1/250 at f5.6, Nikon 70mm-200mm VR, WB 5600K 1 Elinchrom 600RX with Polished Long Throw Reflector at Full Power, Hand Held from the Catwalk, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #5 Shadow Runners.....The start of the men's 3000meters. I really like the shadows running out in front of the pack. Remote D2X, ISO250, 1/250 at f8, Nikon 17mm-55mm G Lens, WB 5600K, 2 Bogen Magic Arms with Super Clamps, 2 Elinchrom 1200RX sport strobes with Polished Long Throw Reflectors ( the strobe in front of the runners is 1/2 Power...and the strobe behind the runners is Full Power...to make the shadow in front more prominent. ) Pocket Wizard MultiMax Transceivers to trigger the D2X and strobes, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #6 Double Teamed.....I like arranging the lights to create an effect that is seldom seen. I used 2 Elinchrom 600RX sport strobes with standard sport reflectors. The key was to tape over the front of the reflector until there was a 2 inch wide vertical opening for the light to shoot through. This cast a 15 foot wide SHAFT of LIGHT illuminated the players but not the audience or the remainder of the court, thus creating a reflection in the court of only the athletes. Nikon D2X, ISO320, 1/250 at f5.6, Nikon 35mm-70mm Lens, WB 5600, 2 Elichrom 600RX sport strobes at Full Power with standard sport reflectors taped as previously described, Pocket Wizard MultiMax Transceivers to trigger the strobes, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #7 Wrapped Up.....is one of UC Irvine's volleyball players, Paul Spittle. This image was taken as a part of the Sports Shooter Academy, the hands on workshop division of Sports Shooter. A FANTASTIC success for students and staff alike. Robert Hanishiro again brought the best to the students. Basketball, Volleyball, Horse Racing, Baseball, Rugby, Portraits and more were all a part of this workshop. This image was captured as a demonstration class using the Nikon SB800 Speedlights. Matt Brown had arranged for students of SSA to have photo access to many events and athletes in the Big West Conference. I had a terrific time and I hope they ask me back next year! Nikon D2H ( the D2X was not available at the time ), ISO200, 1/250 at f2.8, Nikon 17mm - 55mm G Lens, WB 5600K, 3 Nikon SB800 Speedlights, 1 Clamped to the bleacher rail above our subject with a Bogen 175F Clamp, 1 SB800 on the floor to the left using the floor stand that comes with the unit and the warming gel that also comes with the unit, and 1 SB800 hand held by James to the right and behind the subject, 4G Lexar Flash Card. My class participants did all the work and directed me as to the Speedlight output of power and positioning. We learned a great deal and had fun doing the portrait

Well....that wraps up another issue of On The Road.

Adios, Dave
