On The Road
"Off the Road Picture Sales"

May, 2006

Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. Sometimes I feel the need to take a break and stay at home for an extended period of time. Such was the case this past month. This 4 week sabbatical from the airports of America was a welcome relief for myself and my family after a very busy winter. Most freelance photographers cringe at the thought of bypassing two or three assignments, but because I own the rights to all my images and continue to pursue the sale of my stock images I find the break from the riggers of the road to be much needed ......and profitable. Let's take a look at what kinds of images went out the door for stock picture sales this past month while I stayed "off the road."

Image #1 Tiger ...Before I debuted my website a few years ago I seldomly made stock picture sales from my archives outside the United States. Today it is a very different story and for those who own the rights to their pictures I recommend a website design that clients can obtain a clear understanding of the kinds of images you have available for stock. This image of Tiger Woods was submitted for editorial usage to a magazine in Japan. The client was looking for a variety of images of Tiger to which I submitted some low res jpgs (10in X 6.5in at 100 dpi). The client chose this image for use in their editorial publication at which time the High Resolution TIFF (10in X 6.5in at 300 dpi) was transmitted to the client, an invoice was then emailed and payment was made via a Bank Wire Transfer which is common for overseas transactions. Nikon D2X, ISO320, 1/1000 at f4, Nikon 600mm f4 Lens, WB 6700K, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Monopod from Bogen, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #2 Jelly Jam ...Most editors or picture researchers contact me for sports related images but sometimes I can surprise them. In this stock sale a client was searching for images of Derek Jeter. I explained that I did not have any and then added "is there anything else you are looking for" to which they replied, "well, .........how about some marine life." I submitted this image of Jelly Fish. One might ask, "What are the chances of me having a picture of Jelly Fish on file?".....to which I might answer, "What are the chances of a picture researcher who is looking for Derek Jeter also need Jelly Fish?" Researchers are often times working for several clients at the same time, so I ask what else they might need. One Stop Shopping which is a reason why mega-companies like Getty and Corbis are so popular, they have it all and while I do not claim to have it all the sale of this image is a reminder to me to always ask what else someone might need and to always make good images even when I'm on a family vacation visiting the sea aquarium. Nikon D200, ISO640, 1/30 at f5, Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 Lens, WB Fluorescent, Lexar 4G Flash Card. (NOTE: This was only my second experience with the NEW Nikon D200. This is a very impressive camera especially when High ISO sensitivity is required.)
Image #3 Boulder Man ...This stock picture sale, like the image of Tiger Woods, was generated via my website from a client in overseas. The client saw the Night Time Rock Climbing images from a past Workshop at the Ranch and inquired about seeing similar images for editorial use. I submitted about ten low res jpgs that illustrated this unusual sport after which the client chose one to be used as the magazine's cover. The High Resolution TIFF was transmitted and payment was made via a bank wire transfer. Nikon D2X, ISO100, 1/100 at f6.3, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye Lens with Fisheye Correction in Nikon Capture, WB 8500K, 4 Nikon SB800 Speedlights set as Remotes and Nikon SU 800 Master on the hotshoe, Bogen Lightstands and Bogen 175F Clamps to hold the SB800 Speedlights, Bogen Tripod with SLIK Super Ball Head and Kirk L Bracket, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #4 Lone Rider ...This is an image taken four years ago with a Nikon D1X. I sell many images today that were captured throughout my career on film or with earlier models of Nikon digital cameras. Here again the client contacted me through my website looking for images depicting speed and the human body. I submitted 15 low res jpgs of a variety of sports within the criteria requested and this picture was chosen for an editorial magazine article in Europe. Nikon D1X, ISO200, 1/25 at f22, Nikon 400mm f2.8 Lens with Nikon TC14E 1.4 Teleconverter, WB Shade, Bogen Tripod with Whimberly Head, Lexar 512 Flash Card.
Image #5 Michelle Kwan ...I have had a wonderful working relationship with Michelle Kwan, her family and her agent for about 15 years. This stock sale came to me from Michelle's agent and is for an international commercial client that Michelle is working with. My website gave the client some ideas prior to contacting me via email. Before submitting any images I had the client obtain written permission from Michelle's agent for the commercial usage. Once I received written permission I submitted twelve High Resolution TIFF images that were submitted via CD at the request of the client. Once the client settled on this picture of Michelle I was asked to enlarge the 10in X 6.5in High Resolution TIFF submission image to a production Poster size TIFF of 36in X 24in at 300dpi and submit that file on CD to the clients production group. Nikon D1X, ISO800, 1/500 at f2.8, Nikon 300mm f2.8 Lens, WB Daylight, Nikon Pistol Grip, Lexar 512 Flash Card.

Each month I am contacted through my website with inquiries from editors and picture researchers regarding images for possible usage in publications around the world thanks to my website. Each month a variety of images are submitted at the request of those editors and picture researchers to editorial and commercial clients for consideration. And each month I make stock sales from many of those submissions that during the course of the year might total as much as 50% of my annual income. It's a living, and a good one too. If you are in need of pricing guidelines for your own stock picture sales I recommend a computer program called Foto Quote at www.fotoquote.com. Many of today's editors and picture researchers use this program to guide them when negotiating stock picture purchases for their magazines and commercial clients.

Well, ..........I hope you enjoyed this short insight into stock photography sales. See you next time On The Road.

Adios, ....................Dave
