On The Road
November, 2004
Welcome to the November issue of
On The Road. Well,....I am ready for a little break from sports.
I believe it is always wise to get out of the daily routine and
experiment with different subjects and techniques. By allowing
myself to do so I usually discover something about my photography
and myself that I can apply to my sports images and even break
new ground that may lead to...................who knows what else.
I teach several workshops each year. Most of them are dedicated
to sports but I do a few that deal with landscape and the great
outdoors. You never know what you are missing unless you step
out of your comfort zone and stretch your wings and wits. Here
are a few images I made while teaching workshops for Rich Clarkson's
Photography at the Summit Workshop and Moose Peterson's Digital
Landscape Workshop Series.............

Image#1 No goal line on this
field, just a lovely sunrise on the Teton Mountain Range near
Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Nikon D2H, ISO200, 1 1/2 second exposure
at f22, Nikon 12mm-24mm lens, WB 10000K, Bogen Tripod, Lexar
1G Flash Card. |
Image#2 CJ is the owner of the Jackson
Hole Hat Co. She is an expert craftswoman and an artist
in every sense of the word. CJ was kind enough to allow
me to conduct an SB800 location lighting class in her store
with participants at Rich Clarkson's Photography at the
Summit workshop. I used 4 SB800's plus a touch of the available
light in the store to capture a portrait of CJ shaping a
customers hat with steam. Nikon D2H, ISO200, 1/15th sec
at f6.3, Nikon 12mm-24mm lens, WB Cloudy, Lexar 1G Flash
Card. Five Nikon SB800's were used.....1 as the Master on
the D2H Hotshoe, 1 hung from the ceiling with a "Justin
Clamp"(Bogan175F Clamp) to CJ's front left to light
her hat, 1 sitting on the counter on CJ's right to light
her face under the hat brim, 1 directly behind her to backlight
her hair, the steam and separate her from the wall of hats,
and 1 clamped to a display case out of view to CJ's right
to light the wall of hats. All the SB800's power output
is controlled from the Master with Wireless TTL technology.
note: If you are in need of a fine cowboy hat go to www.jhhatco.com
where the finest in custom made hats can be found.

Image#3 Oxbow Bend in Teton National Park
on a very cold morning. This is a layered composite image
containing 2 exposures as taught by Vincent Versace during
Moose Peterson's DLWS class room sessions. One exposure for
the sky and Mount Moran and one image exposed for the frozen
shoreline. This layering technique replaces the procedure
of using a split neutral density filter. Nikon D2H, ISO200,
1/6th sec at f22, EV-0.7, Nikon 12mm-24mm, WB 3200K, Lexar
1G Flash Card, Bogan Tripod and 6 Hand Warmers. |
|
Image#4 Sunrise on Antelope Flats. Simplicity
can be very effective in conveying a mood. Nikon D2H, ISO200,
1/3 sec at f22, EV+0.3, Nikon12mm-24mm lens, WB 10000K,
Lexar 1G Flash Card, Bogan Tripod.

|
Image#5 Autumn Leaf near Jenny Lake. Nikon
D2H, ISO200, 1/90th sec at f4, Nikon 12mm-24mm lens with Close-up
filter, WB 10000K, Lexar 1G Flash Card, Bogan Tripod. I used
the close-up filter to focus on the one leaf and dissolve
the background. I also used a Stream Light to add some light
to the one leaf so I could separate it from the background.
An average image made more unique with a dash of Lightpainting. |
|
Image#6 Ron's Fishing Gear. This is
a Lightpainting executed with a Stream Light. Nikon D2H,
ISO200, 30 second exposure at f10, Nikon 12mm-24mm Lens,
WB 8000K, Lexar 1G Flash Card, Bogan Tripod. Captured during
a class demonstration of Lightpainting.

Stepping out of your comfort zone
can be fun and beneficial to your photography and your health.
It is my favorite time of year to be outdoors. I love what I do
but even I need a change of pace once in a while. This kind of
image making always makes me realize that photography and the
creative process that comes with it is a joy for me regardless
of the subject. I hope you all enjoyed this break away from sports.......................I
did. See you next time On The Road.
Adios, Dave
