On The Road
October, 2004
Hi and welcome to the October issue
of On The Road. The Summer Olympic games is just too massive of
an event to talk about for only one month. Here are some additional
images and stories that might be of interest............

|
Image #1 Swimming.....Outdoors
for the first time since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the
opportunity of using "LONG GLASS" was finally reasonable
choice for the photographer. I love to get in close especially
when there is interesting goggles and light. There are several
qualifying heats which allows the photographer to prepare
themselves for the potential medalists. Whenever there are
heats or warm-ups or practice sessions I will try and use
them to acquire an advantage so as to best service my client.
I used several of the swimming heats to determine if I could
follow swimmers consistently using a Nikon 600mm lens and
TC14E 1.4X Teleconverter. Yes, I could. This way, when Michael
Phelps would race after 3 more heats I was ready and confident
that my lens choice with teleconverter would be the right
choice. Nikon D2H, 1/2000th sec f 7.1, ISO320, Nikon 600mm
f4 lens with Nikon TC14E 1.4X teleconverter, WB Flash+1, Bogen
Monopod, Lexar 1G Flash Card. |
|
Image #2 Softball.....FAST PITCH ! These
ladies can throw heat. My choice of shutter speed and aperture
would be the determining factor for a successful image.
Here, Lisa Fernandez of the USA is stopped cold at 1/2500th
sec. My position was behind the plate and required me to
shoot through the mesh fence. My choice of a wide open aperture
helped diffuse the fence, while my 1/2500th sec shutter
speed froze the ball in mid air. Nikon D2H, ISO320, 1/2500th
sec, Nikon 200mm - 400mm G VR lens at f4, WB Cloudy, Bogen
Monopod, Lexar 1G Flash Card. The f4 aperture not only allows
me to retain a fast shutter speed but softens the background
which helps separate the pitcher for a more distinct image.

Image #3 Gymnastics.....The gymnastics venue
was full of difficult backgrounds. After some careful study
during the 2minute warm up prior to competition I noticed
that this young lady would perform a skill that positioned
her directly over the 2004 and Olympic rings. To photograph
her from a profile position would have placed me in a restricted
area. Photographers are notorious for breaking the rules and
over extending their boundaries. This gymnast would be the
4th competitor in that rotation. I chose to speak to the venue
manager after the warm up and asked if I could be escorted
into the restricted area for this one athlete. "Of Course"
was the reply. Not only was I allowed to photograph this competitor
but my escort asked if I needed the next one and the one after
that.......etc. Some say "don't ask and just do it"
but I usually find that asking seems to work better and keeps
you and your client in good standing when you return the next
day. Nikon D2H, ISO500, 1/320th sec, Nikon 600mm at f4, WB
6300K, Bogen Monopod, Lexar 1G Flash Card. |
|
Image #4 Whitewater Kayak.....My choice
of lens would be that of versatility and length. The Nikon
200mm - 400mm G VR f4 lens is a beautiful piece of equipment.
Easy to hand hold, long, yet short in terms of glass, VR
when needed and SHARP ! REALLY SHARP !!! Team this lens
up with a Nikon TC14E 1.4X Teleconverter and have some fun.
The lens choice the photographer makes is critical in capturing
a strong image. This sport advances towards you so fast
and with ever changing elements of design that the versatility
of zooming in and out allows you to capture several moments
with each athlete. Also, when ever water is part of the
scene, choose a fast shutter speed to freeze all the water
droplets. I like to shoot water events at 1/2500 or faster
when conditions allow it. You will be amazed at the difference
in you images if you shoot at 1/2500, 1/3200, or even 1/5000th
sec. Nikon D2H, ISO320, 1/4000th sec, Nikon 200mm - 400mm
G VR lens with Nikon TC14E 1.4X Teleconverter, WB Flash
+1, Hand held, Lexar 1G Flash Card.

Image #5 Olympic 38.....It is easy to get
so involved with following the athletes that it is difficult
to see some of the smaller aspects that come with the Olympic
Games. The photographer must make the choice to look around
for other images of interest. I captured this image for the
visual effect of a "Saturday Night Special" being
carried around by the official during Athletics. I sent the
card into Newsweeks office at the Main Press Center via courier
and kept on covering the event. It was not until Newsweek
selected the image as part of their Picture of the Day coverage
that I became aware of the inscription on the gun, "Olympic
38". NikonD2H, ISO200, 1/200th sec, NEW Nikon 200mm f2
G VR lens, WB6300K, Nikon Pistol Grip, Lexar 1G Flash Card. |
|
Image #6 Defeat.....Athletes do not
always perform as predicted by the experts. Gail Deevers
crashed and burned in the 100m Hurdles semi's and here is
the final's favorite and current world champion Perdita
Felicien of Canada in her attempt to win GOLD. Often times
the photographers for Newsweek will work as a team when
covering the main event of the evenings competition. Rick
Rickman was at the finish line with a number of remotes
so I chose to cover the start......unusual for the hurdles.
As it turned out, most photographers were down the line
somewhere. My purpose was to show the speed that Joanna
Hayes of the USA gets out of the blocks. This might be the
difference between her and Felicien at the finish. Well,
Hayes came up slightly faster than Flicien who was slowest
of all out of the blocks. Both were hardly visible from
my profile position do to their poor starts. As Felicien
crashed into hurdle #2 she crumpled and turned around to
display a well framed agony of defeat. Nikon D2H, ISO640,
1/1250th sec, Nikon 200mm G VR f2 lens, Nikon Pistol Grip,
WB6300K, Lexar 1G Flash Card.

Well..........that about wraps it
up for this month. I hope you have enjoyed this edition of On
The Road. The choices that you make as a photographer are critical
in the images you capture. The lens, the shutter speed, your position
and subject are choices you make at every event. Get to the event
early, study your subject in order to make the right choices and
you will make the right image.
Adios, Dave
