On The Road
August, 2004
Hi and welcome to On The Road for
August. As many of you know the Summer Olympic Games are in Athens,
Greece this month..........and so am I. I thought it might be
interesting to take a look back at some wonderful moments I had
the opportunity to capture at past Summer Olympics..........

|
Los Angeles 1984. Mary Lou Retton
wins Gymnastics Gold. My first Olympics. The picture that
people associate me with is of Mary Lou performing her perfect
10 vault. But to win the All-Around she had to compete on
all four events. I knew this sport well and also know Mary
lou's routine to the point where I could capture her flying
high at the pinnacle of her split leap on the Balance Beam.
Nikon F3 camera, Nikon 105mm f1.8 lens, Kodak 640 Tungsten
film. |

Seoul 1988 / Women's 4X100 relay Final.
One would think that the Olympics would be where photographers
are welcomed with the red carpet treatment, easy access,
great positions, etc. etc...............NOT ! Very often
it is quite the opposite. To access the photographers mote
that surrounded the track I carried all my equipment down
flights of stairs, through hallways crammed with TV cable
into a closet like room and crawled onto a table and out
a window into the mote photo position. Not easy with a load
of gear. But ounce there I heard the gun go off and the
crowd cheer so I grabbed my Nikon F3 and 400mm f2.8 and
took this frame of Florence Griffith Joyner handing the
baton to Evelyn Ashford for the last leg of the Women's
4X100 relay and the GOLD medal.

Barcelona 1992 / Dream Team... pros come
to the Olympics. For years the USA had dominated Olympic Basketball.
Then came a series of Olympic and World competitions that
found the Soviet Union on the top of the podium. Enter the
"DREAM TEAM". Newsweek had me cover the GOLD
medal final between the USA and Lithuania. With limited access
photo positions on the floor I went to an upper location.
I wanted to capture an image of as many great names as possible
in one frame. This frame of Michael Jordan, Scott Pippin,
Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson has resold many times from my
archives. Nikon f3 Camera, 300mm f2 lens, and Kodak Kodachrome200
film processed at ASA500. |

Atlanta 1996 / Bomb explodes in Olympic
Park. The first week of the Olympics was over. The Magnificent
7 had won the Gymnastics gold. I had shot the would-be cover
image for Newsweek of the Gymnastics Team the day before
and I was back in my room ready to fall asleep. It was 1:17am
and I remember thinking to myself "wow, I am actually
going to fall asleep before 2:00am." No sooner had
my head hit the pillow.......when.......BOOM ! The entire
room shook ! I thought a thunderstorm was approaching but
this image reveals the scene from my window. I was overlooking
the Olympic Park and the bomb site. I shot this frame and
my phone rang. Jimmy Colton, Newsweek's editor at the time,
requested my services in the Olympic Park. This image is
not terrific, but it was taken only minutes after the explosion
from a high vantage point, my hotel room. Nikon F5, 135mm
f2 lens, Kodak Negative film.

Sydney 2000 / The Digital Revolution. There
were many great moments during the 2000 Summer Olympics in
Sydney, Australia. Ian Thorpe, Marion Jones, Maurice Green,
Andrea Raducan, and many others winning GOLD medals. But to
me the most significant memory was a technology revolution.
I captured the entire Games with Digital. Newspapers were
using some digital but no one that I knew of was taking it
to the magazine industry. I had prepared myself throughout
1999 to make the move to all Digital and went to Sydney with
three Nikon D1 cameras. This image of swimmers entering the
water was a favorite and was captured through an underwater
window during the Men's Semi Finals in the Butterfly. Nikon
D1 Camera, 50mm 1.8 lens, Lexar 160MB Flash Card. |
Well,..........I hope all of you
have enjoyed this little walk down memory lane as much as I have.
I am certain that Athens will provide some wonderful stories and
terrific opportunities for pictures. See you in September...................Adios,
Dave
