On The Road

March, 2004

Hello, and welcome to this edition of On The Road. A nice variety of events and techniques ranging from Rhythmic Gymnastics to the PMA show in Las Vegas. So let's take a walk On The Road............

Strobed Track and Field...Fill Flash Wrestling...High ISO Rhythmic Gymnastics

Indoor Track and Field, or Athletics as it is known in Europe, is a lot of fun for the photographer. With two Elinchrom 1000R sport strobes and my Nikon D2H set on Rear Curtain and a shutter speed of 1/15 sec. this combination is wonderful for the motion whirl look. I used a Nikon 12-24mm lens with the aperture set on f5.6 and an ISO of200. The strobes had Long Throw Reflectors so that I only lit the small area of track that provided a clean background. Multi Max Pocket Wizzards were used to fire the strobes and a Lexar 1G flash card.
Men's hurdles and the same procedure as the sprinters in image#1 with one exception.................No REAR CURTAIN. Why?......because I picked up my other D2H and forgot to set the camera on Rear Curtain. Although the image is one of my favorites you can see that if I had used Rear Curtain with the strobes the shadowed effect would have been behind the athletes and given a cleaner " motion " look to the image. All other settings were the same as image#1.
Women's Freestyle Wresting. Dreadful light and all my strobes were installed for a Basketball game and Ice Hockey game in other arenas. This was an opportunity to use my NEW Nikon SB800 Speedlight. Perfect, accurate, and a joy to use. I like FILL FLASH but as most would agree, on camera flash and Digital have not been 100% perfect. The Nikon SB800 IS ACCURATE ! Set on TTL mode and dialed down -1 2/3 I filled in just a touch of light to CLEAN the image. Nikon D2H, ISO640, Nikon 300mm lens, f2.8
The Nikon SB800 reaches a long way..............From the top of the stands with a Nikon D2H, ISO640, 400mm lens, f2.8 Nikon SB800 Speedlight TTL mode dialed down -1 2/3. Clean and sharp and a very natural lighting look. Remember, I only want to add enough light to " clean " the image not to " FLASH " the subject.
Rhythmic Gymnastics Nationals is not a lime light sport, therefore, no TV lights or should I say......ANY LIGHTS. Very dark and Fill Flash or Strobes are not allowed. NikonD2H, ISO1000, 400mm lens, f2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/250. The athletes face was very clean and noise free. The darker background had noise but was easily softened and almost completely removed with NIK Dfine. Lexar 1G flash card Bogen Graphite Tripod with a Whimberly Head.
Rhythmic Gymnastics is a great sport to photograph. Athletes bend and twist into a variety of positions while performing beautiful dance and tumbling skills while throwing Hoops and Ribbons skyward. Nikon D2H, ISO HI - 1 ( 3200 I believe ), Nikon 300mm lens, f2.8 The previous image#5 had the benefit of some ambient light coming in through 4 skylights. This image, #6, was during an evening session, thus the need for the ISO HI - 1 setting. Shutter speed 1/200th was used. Nik Dfine did a nice job of making the noise issue minimal. This ISO setting is very extreme but demonstrated its usefulness in this very extreme situation.
The Glass Flower Ceiling at the Belagio Hotel in Las Vegas. My second appearance for Nikon as a featured speaker at PMA. This image was captured with the NEW Nikon Coolpix 8700. This 8 megapixel DYNAMO of a camera has terrific sharpness and the capability of RAW/NEF capture. Hand held, ISO400, 1/60thsec.

Well............there's a variety. Hope you enjoyed the images and information. The months to come will showcase some great events including the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, Olympic Trials, and of course the Summer Olympics from Athens. Come back next month and join me when we walk On The Road...................................Adios, Dave
