On The Road
November, 2003
Hi, and welcome to the November edition
of On The Road. Well, I was only on the road one time but it was
a good one indeed, Jackson Hole, Wyoming with Rich Clarkson and
his Photography at the Summit workshop. The Rich Clarkson photography
workshops are fantastic. Whether you attend the Sports Photography
Workshop at the US Olympic Training center or the Photography
at the Summit workshops in Jackson Hole at the foot of the Grand
Tetons, these workshops offer so much for any photographer at
any level. This seasons staff included Jodi Cobb, Bill Allard,
James Balog, and Bill Curtsinger, all of National Geographic fame
and Carolyn Cole from the LA Times. The editors side of the staff
featured National Geographic's John Rasmus, and the New York Times'
Mike Smith. Bill Eppridge and John McDonough of SI, Tom Mangelson
of Jackson Hole and of course.....Rich Clarkson. Richard Lopinto
of NIKON revealed all that the D2H is and several NEW lenses and
software that will be available soon. Oh yes, I was there too.
People always ask how to get a foot in the door with the top editors
and photographers of this industry and I can think of no better
way than to attend one of the Rich Clarkson collection of workshops.
Here any participant is able to visit with and spend time with
those photographers and editors who are ready and willing to look
at their portfolios and speak openly and casually about the profession.
This kind of staff is status quo for any of Rich's workshops.
Fantastic!
So........................Get ready for some images..............but
not sports. While I teach a variety of classes in Lightpainting
at the Summit, I do manage to get out and shoot some images of
my own.

Lightpainting is my passion and
this year progress and sales have been wonderful."Sleepin'"
is a 30second exposure at f8 was captured with a NIKON D100
in NEF, ISO320 capture and a 28mm-70mm lens. A Bogan tripod
and Lexar 1G flash card. As in all lightpaintings with a live
subject, Steve remained motionless for the 30seconds as I
painted the subject with light using a VECTOR SPORT SPOT. |
|
Lightpainting again, however, this time
with an entire scene. Here Scott and his horse Dash return
from "The Long Ride" to a familiar barn that I
have lightpainted before. Already familiar as to exposure
/ time for the barn and grounds, I asked Scott and Dash
to pose for this 30 exposure. NIKON D100 in NEF capture,
ISO200 and a 12mm-24mm DX lens, Bogan tripod,Lexar 1Gflash
card. Dash was tired from the days ride and was not bothered
by the Lightpainting from the 2 Vector Sport Spots that
were used to light the scene.

"Mount Moran Morning" Mount Moran
at Oxbow Bend is a magnificent sight at dawn. Half the class
was at this location as the sun colored the clouds above the
mountain. I Lightpainted the sage brush in the foreground
for a complete picture. I used a polarizing filter to drop
the exposure 2 stops. This gave me a 10 second exposure at
f22 and enough time to Lightpaint the foreground. NIKON D100
in NEF capture, ISO200 and a 12mm-24mmDX lens. Bogan tripod,Lexar
1G flash card, and 2 Vector Sport Spots to Lightpaint the
sage brush. |
|
"Self Portrait" Shot for Susan,
my wife of 20 years. The Teton Mountain Range is lit by
the moonlight at 30seconds f8, ISO200. I set the Vector
Sport Spot on the ground and switched on the low lamp and
lit myself for 17seconds. That was enough time to burn me
into the 30 second scene. I hoped off the fence (3seconds
and no significant light on me so I am not captured in the
movement) and had 10 seconds to Lightpaint the foreground
and fence in areas were I was not originally sitting. Maybe
not the best image I have ever taken but I would like to
see someone else try this. I had a blast. With coyotes howling
at the moonlight, a storm building over the Grand Tetons
and Willie Nelson playing in the truck tape deck..........life
is good.
