On The Road
October, 2003
Hello and welcome to the October issue
of On The Road. A variety month to be sure from portraits to workshops
to stock image sales. Let's have a look.......................
|
|
Portraiture is a specialty all
its own. The great ones like Joe McNally, Walter Iooss , and
Neil Liefer come to mind when I think of great portraits of
athletes. All of us need to be prepared to take a portrait
and a good one at that, even if it is not our strength. This
portrait of Brook Billings, the USA's top scorer in men's
Volleyball, was captured with a NIKON D1X, 35-70mm lens as
a NIKON RAW NEF file on a LEXAR 1GB flash card. Four strobes
were used, 2 with soft boxes and Elinchrome 1000R units to
light the frontside.....1strobe with a 20 degree grid to back
light and 1 strobe with a 20 degree grid to light the court
behind. Shot for Volleyball Magazine at the US Olympic Training
Center in Colorado Springs. |
|
Another portrait, this time a stock
image sale for an editorial education book. Originally shot
on film for a cover assignment for Newsweek prior to the
Atlanta Olympics in 1996. This image of Dominique Moceanu
required a white backdrop and red leotard as are the colors
of Newsweek. 2 Elinchrome strobes with softboxes in front
and 2 Elinchrome strobes with wide reflectors to light the
white backdrop. Although Newsweek used another shot for
their cover, all my images are kept on file for potential
future sales. This is a good example of money made after
the assignment fee.

Archival images of historic value is a large
part of my business. This is one of several images that have
been purchased for commercial use by an Olympic sponsor for
an AD campaign going into Athens 2004. Model releases must
be obtained prior to this kind of commercial usage. Shot with
film and a NIKON F3 and a rare 300mmF2 lens at the 1984 Summer
Olympics in Los Angeles. |

This diagram was part of a presentation
on "Stobe Lighting " given in Indianapolis at
the NCAA Hall of Champions Photography Workshop. A great
workshop environment was made possible with terrific effort
by Todd Greenwood and George Smith of the NCAA Hall of Champions,
Jody Grober at Roberts Distributors, and Greg Napoli of
NIKON. World League Volleyball was shot with 4 Elinchrome
1000R strobes, Pocket Wizzard Multi Max transceivers were
used to trigger the lights remotely from my Nikon D1X camera.

Lightpainting...my passion. This image was
shot as a class demonstration of Lightpainting at Moose Peterson's
Digital Landscape Workshop Series in the Grand Tetons. I have
really enjoyed the DLWS workshops with Moose and Vincent Versace.
A 30 second exposure with a NIKON D100 set on Long Exposure
Noise Reduction mode, I side lit the barn and landscape with
a new light source...the VECTOR SPORT SPOT 2 million candle.
Similar to my old friend the Night Blaster but lasts 5 times
longer before recharging. $35 at my local Pep Boys! I can
not think of many items the photographer buys for $35. |
Well,.........Portraits, Stock
Image Sales, Workshops, and Lightpainting, pretty good month.
See you next time with On The Road. Adios,
Dave
