On The Road

July, 2003

Hi, and welcome to July's On The Road. This months edition is a few days late as I have been " On The Road " and I wanted to include my last project taken on July 31st. Get ready for a variety...................

What do the Thunderbirds have to do with sports. Well, as you know, I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and do some work for the United States Air Force Academy Athletic Dept. and Sports Information Dept. So I photographed the Thunderbirds exhibition during Cadet graduation. I used a D1X, a 70-200VR set on normal mode and panned at 1/50th for this fly by.
US Gymnastics Championships were next in Milwaukee. Here the Worlds Team was selected. This image is from the Jr division. Grace Taylor demonstrates fantastic flexibility during her uneven parallel bar routine. Nikon D1X, ISO800 at 1/500th f2.8 with a Nikon 70-200VR lens.
Stock sales occur each month. This image shot in February for the Air Force Academy is now on file and ready for Stock Sales. It sold to an equipment company this month that makes basketball hoops for use in their catalog. I encourage photographers to retain their copyrights for future stock sales.
This months Workshop at the Ranch featured Velodrome Cycling There are always images to be found at events that might not be the champion but interesting and perhaps useful for Stock Sales down the road. A paralympic athlete and his shadow prepare for the day of racing. Nikon D1X, 300mmf2.8 lens, White Balance(WB) set on Shade-3 for extra warmth at 8:45am.
The Sports Photography Workshop with Rich Clarkson and a great staff were in town for a week. I have been involved with Rich and his workshops for 18 years or so and I believe this one was one of the BEST workshops ever! A " Hands On " style workshop, Rich Clarkson's Sports Photography Workshop featured instructors like Rich Clarkson, Peter Read Miller, John McDonough, Damian Stromeyer, Brad Mangin, Robert Seale, Maureen Grise, Matt Ginella, Mark and Joey Terrell, and a host of others, ( and me). The students went right to work shooting on locations like Coors Field and the Olympic Training Center,... Arena Lighting classes, Portrait Lighting seminars, Remote camera workshops and portfolio reviews. A great week of hands on learning combined with terrific seminars and presentations So why the Bel Air shot.........? This is the logo for my WHAT DRIVES an IMAGE presentation that debuted during the week of the workshop. I believe the students enjoyed and learned from WHAT DRIVES an IMAGE as I have received over 35 emails referring to how helpful the presentation had been. If you have never attended one of Rich's workshops, they are a must for the photographer that wants to improve, network, and break into the industry. The Bel Air image was shot with a Nikon CoolPix 3100.
Lightpainting in California. This Joshua Tree was Lightpainted in the desert near, of all places, Joshua Tree, California. I used a Nikon D100, Bogan Tri Pod, Nikon 17-35mm lens, at 4seconds f8. A Night Blaster ( AKA Mr. Night Blaster to his friends ) was used to light the Trees, the twilight illumination was provided by..........well, the natural light about 30minutes after sunset in the desert. Many thanks to Rick Rickman for taking me out to this location.

Wow!..... We covered a lot this month. I could use a rest. But that will have to wait as there are more images to be captured. Any questions?............Any answers?........Any Comments or suggestions?..... Drop me an email and I will do my best to help you. Until next time here at On The Road...................................

Adios, Dave
