On The Road
"The Year 2006 in Review!"
January, 2007
Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road.
WOW! ...... What a year 2006 has been. I logged more miles than
in recent years and broadened my horizon with respect to clients
and my photography.
Let's have a look where I was On The Road during
2006 ..................
Image
#1 Torino Taxi ... The Winter Olympic Games in Torino got
the year of 2006 off to a great start. This image illustrates
my Italian taxi ride from the Main Press Center in Torino
to my Hotel late one night after Newsweek magazine had closed
their opening Olympic issue. Nikon D2X, ISO100, 5 seconds
at f8, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7700K, Gitzo Carbon Fiber
Monopod, SLIK Super Ball Head, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#2 Dutch Master ... Olympian Bob de Jong of the Netherlands
won the gold medal in the men's 10,000 meter Long Track Speed
Skating event in Torino. Speed Skating, both Long and Short
Track, plus Figure Skating were my main venues to cover at
the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Nikon D2X, ISO800, 1/400 at
f4, Nikon 400mm f2.8 Lens with TC 14E 1.4 Teleconverter, WB
Fluorescent -2 with a hue adjustment of -3, Gitzo Carbon Fiber
Monopod, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#3 Farewell to the Olympics (self portrait) ... Torino would
be my 12th and final Olympic Games to cover. I still love
the Olympic sports and the Olympic athletes but I feel strongly
that I need to give up something in order to move forward
onto new challenges .......... Therefore, I bid farewell
to the Olympic Games and move onto the next adventure. Nikon
D2X, ISO100, 1/10 at f5.6, Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye Lens, WB
6700K, Self Timer, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod, SLIK Super
Ball Head, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#4 On the Hoof ... It's springtime and the first week of
May brings to mind thoughts of Kentucky and a week of horse
racing coverage that features the Kentucky Derby. Remote
cameras are used by the sports photographer to capture images
from locations that are often times restricted. Remote cameras
are allowed under the rail at Churchill Downs and almost
always produce a dynamic image. Nikon D2X, ISO250, 1/2500
at f5.6 Aperture Priority with EV -1, Nikon 17-55mm Lens,
WB 6700K, Ground Plate by OverXposed with SLIK Super Ball
Head, Nikon DR-4 Right Angle View Finder, N90M3-P Pre Trigger
cord, Pocket Wizard Multi Max Transceivers, Lexar 4G Flash
Card.
|
Image
#5 The Night Climber ... This is a Lightpainting of a night
rock climber. Rock climbing and bouldering after sunset has
become a popular extreme sport over the past few years. I
have been fortunate to have had access to this sport and its
athletes in such a way so as to make some Lightpaintings of
this extreme activity. Nikon D2X, ISO100, 30 Seconds at f5.6,
Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 4200K, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod, Inova
XO3, SLIK Super Ball Head, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#6 Down River Sunset ... I have always enjoyed the mountains
and the activities that are part of the mountain life style.
This summer the Teva Mountain Games were held in Colorado
and produced some fantastic pictures, but sometimes when the
hoop-la of the event is over I like to stick around and see
who goes down river for the pleasure of the ride. This lone
kayaker was one of my favorite images of the summer. Nikon
D2X, ISO250, 1/1000 at f5.6, Nikon 200-400 G VR Zoom Lens,
WB 7700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#7 Out of the Woods ... Chris Di Marco appears to be in the
trees but is actually hitting his tee shot on #8 at Castle
Pines during the International Golf Tournament in August.
This image is shot through the thick pine trees using my Nikon
D2X, ISO200, 1/1000 at f 4, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens,
WB 7700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card. The shallow depth of field
is created by the use of a long lens and wide open aperture.
This combination helps to dissolve the trees in the foreground
and single out Di Marco in the shaft of sunlight.

#8 Corn Woman of Chincheros ... The American PHOTO Mentor
Series TREK to Peru was the top of the list of workshops I
taught during 2006. Teaching has always been a big part of
my life and I try to teach several workshops each year. This
Trek to Peru was a very unique experience and produced many
interesting images. Nikon D2Xs, ISO200, 1/160 at f6.3, Nikon
17-55mm Lens, WB 6700K, One Nikon SB800 Speedlight as a Remote
with power output of +1, Nikon SU800 Commander on the hot
shoe, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
|
Image
#9 Snow Job ... Rookie starter for the Denver Broncos Jay
Cutler gave the Cincinnati Bengals a snow job during the Sunday
night Christmas Eve game at Invesco Field at Mile High. Other
projects have taken me away from the NFL for much of the 2006
season but I wanted to see Cutler play. He is a talent and
shows glimpses of greatness. It was fun to spend Christmas
Eve on the sidelines. Nikon D2Xs, ISO800, 1/640 at f2.8, Nikon
400mm f2.8 Lens, WB 6700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card, 4 Hand Warmers.
|

#10 Home Sweet Home ... At home in the Rocky Mountains is
where I love to be with my family. Garden of the Gods and
Pikes Peak are only a stones throw away from my front door.
Nikon Coolpix P4, ISO100, Aperture Priority with EV-1, Gitzo
Carbon Fiber tripod, SLIK Super Ball Head. |
Well, .... 2006 was a great year
On the Road. My business is in transition these days and by my
own design I will continue to take on new challenges in the new
year. Stock sales are mostly done via the website/internet and
involve many overseas clients, teaching went international for
me this year and will increase both here in the US and abroad,
my Lightpainting has evolved from an artistic print making endeavor
to both assignments and stock sales. My faith has grown, my family
is healthy and I am grateful to be working as a photographer and
look forward to another year.
Thanks to all of you who have joined me each
month for wherever On The Road has taken me ....................
See you next time. Adios, Dave
